->Mentha canadensis

Traits:

  • found in eastern Asia, North America;
  • very hardy perennial plant, habitat in swamps, river and lake shores, edges of woods or in zones with moisture;
  • blooms from late spring until frost;
  • flowers have a light pink color;
  • extremely invasive through underground runners;
  • readily hybridizes with other mint species;
Chemotype: quite diverse, but only the high menthol forms are cultivated. The North American forms have a typical pennyroyal(Mentha pulegium) smell and taste, but the eastern Asian forms are the ones who are cultivated for oils and crystallized menthol.

  • Mentha canadensis (Mentha arvensis var. piperascens) - Japanese Menthol mint
  • Mentha canadensis - American Corn mint
