Mentha

The genus Mentha consists of 18 species of plants which are widespread throughout the globe, some of which are very popular:
  • Mentha aquatica (includes Mentha aquatica var. citrata)
  • Mentha arvensis
  • Mentha australis
  • Mentha canadensis (Mentha arvensis var. piperascens, Mentha arvensis var. glabrata)
  • Mentha cervina
  • Mentha dahurica
  • Mentha diemenica
  • Mentha gattefossei
  • Mentha grandiflora
  • Mentha japonica
  • Mentha laxiflora
  • Mentha longifolia
  • Mentha pulegium
  • Mentha repens
  • Mentha requienii
  • Mentha satureioides
  • Mentha spicata
  • Mentha suaveolens
Because of many species and the widespread habitat of them, hybrids occur in zones where two or more species share the zone. Hybrids are more known than the pure species because some are very important and share the traits of both parents. Hybridization widens the chemotype and phenotype spectrum and through it many new cultivars arise. Below is a list of known hybrids:

  • Mentha carinthiaca (Mentha arvensis x Mentha suaveolens)
  • Mentha dalmatica (Mentha arvensis x Mentha longifolia)
  • Mentha dumetorum (Mentha aquatica x Mentha longifolia)
  • Mentha gracilis (Mentha arvensis x Mentha spicata)
  • Mentha maximilianea (Mentha aquatica x Mentha suaveolens)
  • Mentha piperita (Mentha aquatica x Mentha spicata)
  • Mentha rotundifolia (Mentha longifolia x Mentha suaveolens)
  • Mentha smithiana ([Mentha arvensis x Mentha aquatica] x Mentha spicata)
  • Mentha verticillata (Mentha arvensis x Mentha aquatica)
  • Mentha villosa (Mentha spicata x Mentha suaveolens)
  • Mentha villoso-nervata (Mentha spicata x Mentha longifolia)
